If you’re planning a trip to the French Caribbean, you’ve probably seen Air Caraïbes pop up in your flight search. It’s a smaller airline but honestly sometimes the smaller carriers surprise you and in a good way. I was curious. Is it really worth flying with them?
Here’s my full experience, along with practical tips and insider info for travelers.
1. What is Air Caraïbes?
Air Caraïbes is a French West Indian airline with its main office in Les Abymes Guadeloupe. Its main hubs are at Pointe-à-Pitre International Airport and Paris Orly Airport. They also have a main city at Martinique Aimé Césaire International Airport which is close to Fort-de-France.
History: Caraïbes is a French airline that began in 2000 when Air Guadeloupe and Air Martinique merged. It flies to France and between islands in the Caribbean. It started flying to Paris in 2003 and switched to bigger Airbus A330 planes in 2012. It is now a part of Groupe Dubreuil with French Bee and it is an important airline that connects the French Caribbean with Europe.
Groupe Dubreuil owns most of it (85%) and it has about 1,100 employees.
2. Where They Fly
Air Caraïbes covers both regional and long-haul routes:
- Regional Caribbean: Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Martin, Saint Barthélemy, French Guiana
- Long-haul: Paris Orly ↔ Guadeloupe & Martinique
They also codeshare with airlines like Air Corsica, Caribbean Airlines, French Bee, Iberia, and even the French national railway operator SNCF which is pretty unique.
Tip from me: If you’re coming from Asia or Pakistan, you’ll likely have a layover in Paris. Give yourself at least 3 to4 hours to make the connection stress free.
3. Fleet & Aircraft
Air Caraïbes has a modern fleet, perfect for both regional hops and long haul flights:
| Aircraft | In Service | Passengers |
| Airbus A330-200 | 1 | 303 |
| Airbus A330-300 | 2 | 354 |
| Airbus A350-900 | 3 | 389 |
| Airbus A350-1000 | 4 | 429 |
| ATR 72-600 | 4 | 74 |
Fun fact: One of their old A330-200s was sold to the French Air Force and became a presidential plane!
4. Cabin Classes & Food
Flying Air Caraïbes combines French elegance with Caribbean charm.

- Hot meal on long flights; snacks on shorter hops
- Soft drinks, tea, coffee sometimes wine too
- Dishes :Creole chicken, Caribbean rice, or French pasta
- I really liked the little things, like the warm bread and the sweet dessert.
Premium Economy
- Wider seats and priority boarding
- Welcome drink: champagne or rum punch
- Main courses: grilled fish with coconut sauce or beef bourguignon
- Desserts: tropical fruits or French pastries
Business Class
- Lie-flat seats with lounge access

- Multi-course French-Caribbean menu
- Fresh bread, artisanal desserts, breakfast before landing
- Pre-flight champagne and full bar service
Tip:If you want halal, vegetarian, or gluten-free food, you should order at least 48 hours in advance.
On newer planes, there are personal screens, films, music, games and Wi-Fi.
5. Pricing & Value
Air Caraïbes often beats Air France on French Caribbean routes. Here’s how to get the best value:
- Book early, especially for peak season
- Compare travel time vs. cost (sometimes a slightly pricier flight saves hours)
- Check baggage allowances ( they differ by cabin)
- Join the Préférence loyalty program for future perks
6. Safety & Reputation
The airline has a good record for safety. The only big accident they had was Flight 1501 in 2001, which was very sad. Other than that reviews talk about how friendly the staff is, how smooth the service is and how laid-back the Caribbean vibe is.
I noticed that passengers often praise how helpful the crew is and how real the food is on board. This is different from bigger, less personal airlines.
7. Travel Tips
- Book via aircaraibes.com to avoid extra fees
- Check in online 24 hours before your flight
- Confirm luggage transfer if connecting from another airline
- Bring snacks or entertainment for short island flights
- Check visa requirements if transiting through France
8. Pros & Cons
Pros:
Specialist in French Caribbean routes
Tasty, authentic meals and friendly crew
Good value for the price
Cons:
Smaller airline with limited global connections
Layovers required if flying from Asia or Pakistan
Entertainment can be limited on older aircraft
9. What I think in the end
Air Caraïbes is a good choice if you’re going to the French Caribbean. It was cheap, dependable, and surprisingly charming, which made my trip fun.
I really liked the food. The Creole flavours tasted like they were made at home, and the crew was very friendly. I haven’t found another airline that has the same cosy, French-Caribbean style as this one.
Tip: Make your reservation early, choose your cabin carefully, and don’t miss out on their famous dishes they’re the best!read more
